Manufacturing plays a pivotal role in the growth and development of an economy. An active manufacturing base leads to more employment generation and productivity in the economy. Besides, statistics show that the manufacturing sector fosters more economic activity than any other sector.
When one thinks of some of the leading manufacturing companies in the countries, Grasim Industries Ltd is one name that profoundly pops first. A subsidiary of the Aditya Birla Group, Grasim Industries Ltd is a manufacturing company based in Mumbai, Maharashtra. Being one of the oldest manufacturing companies in the country, here is how much the company has grown over the years.
An inspiring journey of growth
Regarded as one of the largest exporters of Viscose Rayon Fiber in India, Grasim Industries Ltd was incorporated on August 25th, 1947. Initially, the company started its journey as a textile manufacturer in 1948. However, over the years, the company spread its operations in cement, chemicals, VSF (viscose staple fiber), and textiles.
Today, the company’s core businesses lie in VSF and cement, which contribute to nearly 90 percent of its operating profits and revenues.
Today, Grasim is regarded as a pioneer in VSF (Viscose Staple Fibre), a biodegradable fiber that has characteristics similar to cotton. Due to its extremely versatile and blendable quality, VSF is often used in home textile, dress material, non-woven applications, and apparel. The company’s VSF plants are located across the country in states like Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, and Gujarat, having an aggregate TPA capacity of 333,975.
The company ventured into cement production in the mid-1980s. It set up its first cement plant at Jawad, Madhya Pradesh. In 2004, Grasim acquired a major stake and management control in Ultra Tech Cement, one of the top cement companies in India. This acquisition proved to be extremely beneficial to the Aditya Birla Group, as it led the company to the top of the league. In July 2010, Samruddhi Cement Limited (SCL) joined hands with Ultra Tech, thereby fostering the restructuring of Grasim’s cement business.
Through its subsidiary, Ultra Tech Cement, Grasim has a capacity of nearly 52 million TPA (Tonnes Per Annum). At present, the company has a total of 11 composite plants, four bulk terminals, 53 ready-mix concrete plants, and eight split grinding units across the country. All units are ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certified for quality systems and environment management systems respectively.
