Prime Insights: What are some of the significant milestones you have achieved in your career?

My journey began with schooling in the 90’s in the Mahabubnagar district, Telangana, state of India. I’m incredibly grateful for the educational opportunities my parents provided despite their near-frequent job transfers during my early childhood. As I pursued my bachelor of engineering (B.E.) in computer science at Hyderabad’s Osmania University, my aspirations to pursue my graduate research studies in an esteemed university in the US only grew stronger as I noticed folks in my immediate family circle landing admissions to some of the most prestigious international research universities. So, I was elated to learn that I got admitted to the University of Kansas’s (KU) Computer Science (MS) program. I had a great learning experience at KU, which is home to the esteemed International Technology Transfer Center (ITTC), a premier research institution where some of the most cutting-edge computer science research on remote sensing and polar melting was taking place with funding support from the National Science Foundation (NSF).

After graduation, I gained industry experience as a software engineer developing mobile communications software at Motorola and Hughes Networks but increasingly yearned to contribute to the business side of technology. This led me to pursue my MBA from Cornell University and later to transition from engineering to a product management role while landing an opportunity in a cloud computing company in California. Over the last few years, I have had an incredible opportunity to build and launch technology products in the cloud computing industry in California’s Silicon Valley while partnering with some of the most talented engineers and scientists.

Prime Insights: Can you discuss a project or initiative you led that had a substantial impact on your career?

I regularly attend cloud computing-related industry events such as VMworld, and I believe one of my most impactful moments recently was receiving industry recognition for a technology solution that I have envisioned and launched to allow customers to cost-effectively scale their cloud environments. The recognition received a ‘Best of VMworld’ award for this particular product due to its proven effectiveness in helping customers lower their cloud infrastructure administration costs by up to 70%.

Prime Insights: What awards or recognitions have you received that you are most proud of?

One of the achievements I am most proud of is being elevated to a ‘Senior member’ status within the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers) community. IEEE is the world’s largest and one of the oldest (140-year-old!) technical professional organizations, and its overarching mission of fostering technological innovation and excellence for the benefit of humanity is very much in alignment with my own principles and life goals. I very much cherish nurturing and mentoring budding engineers and technology entrepreneurs through the various community events and conferences organized by our IEEE local chapter.

More recently, I had the great honor to have been recognized for acting as the judge for the 2024 Stevie Awards, where I had the unique opportunity to review world-class nominations under the “International Business” and “Great Employers” categories of the awards. It was truly a humbling experience to judge the incredible nominations from all around the world and to help pick the winning candidates.

Prime Insights: What role does technology play in your leadership approach?

My advice to leaders would be to embrace technological innovation and a growth mindset, as technology is increasingly going to play a greater role in all aspects of leadership. Cloud computing is an incredibly rapidly changing arena and for a technology professional to stay successful in this industry, it is essential to constantly stay on top of emerging trends such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, and cybersecurity and their impact on cloud deployments of customers, whether it is across public cloud, private Cloud or hybrid cloud environments. Leaders should surround themselves with a mastermind group of experts in their domain. Lastly, I advise aspiring leaders to always be learning and experimenting within their field of expertise in order to continue to harness incremental value for their stakeholders, whether they are your clients, business partners, or team members.

Prime Insights: What strategies do you plan to implement to ensure continued success and growth?

Just as some of the world’s great businesses have mission statements and leadership principles, I believe each leader should create their own guiding principles and/or strategies to ensure success in their career and in life. One of the books that has had a huge influence on me in this area is Stephen Covey’s “7 Habits of Successful People.” Some of the principles laid out in the book, such as “Be proactive” and “Sharpen the saw,” may sound like cliches, but I believe they are time-tested and packed with incredible wisdom. Having a set of guiding principles along with a strong discipline to stick to the principles at all times—especially during the inevitable trials and tribulations that career and life throw at leaders—is an essential trait of leaders I look up to. These factors are also what every emerging leader should internalize for continued growth in their career.

Prime Insights: What advice would you give to aspiring leaders who look up to you?

Remember that every setback you face is a learning opportunity, and every win is a milestone in your journey. Both success and failure are invaluable elements of professional life and can offer tremendous opportunities for personal and professional development for any leader. Remember that you don’t just seek perfection; you always seek progress. Always act with integrity, and most importantly, remind yourself to enjoy the amazing adventure that is a career in information technology!

Prime Insights: What message would you like to convey to the next generation of technology leaders?

My message to the next generation of technologists is simple: indulge in your curiosity but be relentless in execution. Have a strong bias towards action. Always be learning new technology trends and assessing their impact on established products or solutions over the next 5 to 10 years to stay ahead of the innovation curve. Build strong connections with your peers and established leaders in your industry. As executives in the technology industry, have a “customer first” mindset while investigating solutions for existing customer pain points. Finally, stay focused on delivering impactful solutions to customers, and your reputation will precede you.
