The deaths count rise to 35 with the collapse of the Indore Temple well

Hindustan Times published the news of the breakdown of an Indore temple well, causing havoc and the deaths of many. The simple and joyful celebrations of Ram Navami turned into a horrific tragedy and loss when the slab constructed over an ancient ‘bawdy’ or well suddenly collapsed and fell.

The temple step well collapse recorded a death toll of 35, according to the officials in Madhya Pradesh. The news agency was informed by Indore Collector Dr Ilayaraja T that 35 people have died in this tragic incident while till now only 14 people have been rescued. Some pictures from the news reveal an operation underway after the roof of a ‘bawdi’ or well as Indore people call it, collapsed at Beleshwar Mahadev Jhulelal in Indore on Thursday 30th March 2023. This rescue operation was led by the Madhya Pradesh police, State Disaster Emergency, National Disaster Response Force and the district administrative bodies.

A total record of 35 deaths has been noted so far, with one missing and about 14 have been rescued. Two of them returned home safely after treatment. The search to find the missing person is still carried out by the operation to trace if anyone is stuck in the underway. The operation continued for 18 long hours and it started at 12.30 on Thursday, continuing as told by the Collector. The matter is also being closely inspected as to why such an incident took place by a magisterial inquiry. Shivraj Singh, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister has announced a sum of INR 5, 00,000 exgratia to the families of the deceased and a sum of INR 50,000 to the families of the injured. The sum is to be given through the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund, he has also added.

To take hold of the situation PM Modi has also made his statement on this matter. He said that he is deeply hurt by this incident at Indore, especially occurring on the auspicious date of Ram Navami. He has always spoken to the Madhya Pradesh CM to take a regular updates on the situation. The State Government is taking charge of rescue and relief at a quick pace. Modi has also remarked on his utter grievances and said that his prayers are always with them, those brutally affected by the incident. Questions are now on the lease as to how did the administration allow the construction of a slab on the top of such an ancient well. Laxminarayan Temple’s head priest said that the roof was constructed without any concrete support just by putting stone slabs and concrete by fitting iron rods.  Probably, this was the cause behind such mishaps and loss of lives.

Later it was recorded as per timenownews.com that over 50 people fell into the well and most people belonged to the same family. Many children were also affected by this incident. The Ram Navami celebration was going on in the Patel Nagar area in Indore. An army team was also called for the rescue operation and work was done to remove 11 bodies during the day and 24 bodies later at night. The people of Indore are still in shock and they are looking up to the State Government for an answer to such unexpected injustice.
