Prime Insights: Brief us on the inception story of the company.

I grew up surrounded by businessmen in my family, so the idea of starting my own venture was always there. But in the early 90s, it was a different story. As a married woman with a child, venturing out professionally wasn’t an easy path. However, I had my MMS (Marketing) degree from the prestigious NMIMS, and I couldn’t let that go to waste. The journey from concept to launch had its teething troubles; starting a company was completely new territory for me. Luckily, with some guidance from supportive friends and family, I was able to overcome those initial hurdles.

Prime Insights- How have you kept a balance between your personal life and your professional one?

Work-life balance was definitely a challenge in the early days, especially with a young son. Thankfully, I had a supportive family and reliable help at home. As the business matured, I gained more flexibility. I could schedule meetings strategically and even work remotely when needed. This newfound freedom helped me create a better balance between my personal and professional lives.

Prime Insights- While every CEO faces challenges, do you find any unique obstacles specific to your situation or industry?

Certainly, some challenges were unique to my situation. Early on, there were surprised looks when I entered meetings—a woman in a then-male-dominated industry. To stand out, I focused on exceeding expectations. Beyond outstanding sales service, I prioritized on-time delivery, ensuring clients received not just the product but a reliable experience. This focus on exceeding expectations helped me gain respect and establish myself in the industry.

Prime Insights: What kind of clients do you serve? Any special mentions?

Our core clientele were B2B clients, mainly medium- and large-sized trading companies. We built strong partnerships with prestigious names like The Oberoi Group, Wockhardt, and Glenmark in pharmaceuticals, Marksons Pharma, and Indoco Remedies. While some collaborations, like Jetairways, faced challenges, others thrived, including Roquette India Pvt. Ltd. and Lokhandwala Constructions. This diverse client base across trading sectors highlights our adaptability and commitment to exceeding expectations.

Prime Insights: How do you keep up with the changing market trends?

Staying ahead of market trends is crucial. Fortunately, I’ve cultivated strong, long-term relationships and built a great deal of personal rapport with many clients (some over 15 years!). This trust allows them to keep me informed about new industry developments and product launches. By staying close to my clients’ needs, I can ensure I’m always offering the most relevant solutions.

Prime Insights: Do you believe R&D is essential for the growth of the company?

In our industry, staying on top of trends is paramount. Technology evolved rapidly, and we had to constantly learn and adapt. Research is a very crucial part of the journey to success. We actively researched new products and technologies, as we had to be on our toes to ensure we weren’t left behind in the ever-changing landscape.

Prime Insights: How necessary do you feel it is to keep your employees content? How do you ensure it?

I’ve always believed in fostering a positive and supportive work environment. Being a woman, some might see compassion as a weakness in business, but for me, it’s been a strength. My focus wasn’t solely on profit; I valued my employees’ well-being. I avoided putting undue pressure on them and instead encouraged a “can-do” attitude. This approach fostered loyalty; many staff members stayed with me for 8–10 years, with my longest-tenured employee by my side for a remarkable 30 years. Low turnover speaks volumes about the positive work culture we cultivated.

Prime Insights: What message do you want to give to those CEOs who give up on their dreams because of some stereotypes?

To aspiring CEOs, especially those facing stereotypes, my message is this: believe in yourself. Trust your abilities and the vision that drives you. Never stop learning; stay informed about your industry and the ever-changing world. Build a strong network—surround yourself with supportive individuals who can offer guidance and encouragement. Finally, remember to balance your priorities.

Prime Insights: Who do you look up to, and what do you convey further to the ones who look up to you?

Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, founder of Biocon, has always been a role model for me. Her pioneering spirit in biotechnology, overcoming hurdles, and achieving global recognition are truly inspiring. The landscape for women entrepreneurs is definitely changing. They’re gaining recognition worldwide, and government initiatives are providing valuable support. This is a fantastic time for women to step into leadership roles and make their mark on the world.
To aspiring leaders: believe in yourself, multitask like a boss, and chase your dreams with fierce optimism. Have faith in your ability to multitask. Balance out your priorities and take some time during the day to pursue your dreams. Learn from your failures and kick the ball in the goal, and the universe will conspire to help you score!

Prime Insights: How are you giving back to society (CSR)?

We believe in contributing to society beyond just our core business activities. One way we do this is through a recently launched corporate gifting initiative. This allows me to tap into my creative side while tackling a new challenge. It’s been incredibly rewarding to explore this new avenue while fulfilling corporate gifting needs. Furthermore, we’ve established a strong partnership with an NGO that funds a school for underprivileged children in Dharavi, Mumbai. Education is the cornerstone of a brighter future, and we’re committed to supporting these children by ensuring they have access to quality learning opportunities.

Ms. Vinita RaiPrime Insights: Lastly, is there a message you would like to give to Prime Insights readers?

For all the aspiring women entrepreneurs reading this, my message is simple: believe in yourselves. Have unwavering confidence and cultivate resilience. Embrace your mistakes as valuable learning experiences. Educate yourselves on financial literacy; it’s a crucial skill for any business leader. Most importantly, build your business on a foundation of ethics and honesty. These core values will guide you towards success and earn you lasting respect. The world needs your unique contributions; don’t be afraid to chase your dreams!
