History behind Ganesh Chaturthi

Ganesh Chaturthi was just merely a household celebration where people worshiped the lord Ganesha but in the 17th century the Maratha ruler, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj changed the ordinary way of celebration and motivated people to the celebration on a large scale.

This helped to bring unity and spread love and harmony in public. This way Ganesha’s position penetrated deeper into the hearts of devotees.

During the British rule, the colonial government banned the celebration as it was a threat to their rule. They never wanted people to unite against them. However, the dynamics didn’t remain the same because of freedom fighter Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak.

Tilak motivated people to celebrate the festival again with the same enthusiasm. This not only fueled the rise of Ganesh Chatuthi but also the unity that worked against the demise of the colonial period.
