Prime Insights: Can you tell us about yourself and your role in the construction and infrastructure sector?
I am Dr Preethi ANANTH, architect. I started at the age of 19 and since then have successfully developed and delivered many projects. I graduated from a French university and worked for Le Corbusier on the prestigious Eglise de Firminy project in France. After my master’s degree I continued my studies with a PhD. I was living in France for nearly 11 years. While studying I had the chance to work with a few famous architects. My experience has provided me with valuable expertise in managing large-scale projects, overcoming complex challenges, and delivering high-quality outcomes.
Prime Insights: What inspired you to choose a career in construction and infrastructure and how did your leadership journey begin?
I was drawn to construction and infrastructure because I saw the chance to build lasting, meaningful spaces that affect people’s lives. My leadership experience started with doing direct project work where owning work and overcoming obstacles and leading teams was a natural extension. Over time, I learned that to have a successful project, it’s not just about the technical skills. It’s about leadership, relationships and collaboration.
Prime Insights: What obstacles have you encountered as a female leader in a traditionally male-dominated industry, and how have you overcome them?
I’m fortunate that along the way I’ve never felt limited by the fact that construction and infrastructure are male-dominated fields. My team, clients and a very supportive partner surrounded me and valued capability, commitment and results over gender. This allowed me to focus on learning, growing, and taking on responsibilities without feeling limited by stereotypes.
Historically, the industry has had fewer women in leadership positions, but my experience has shown me that when organizations cultivate a culture of merit and respect for one another, opportunities are available to everyone. I’ve always concentrated on producing quality work, building strong relationships and leading with integrity, and I think those qualities are gender-neutral.
Prime Insights: What is your definition of engineering excellence, and what are the principles that guide your leadership style?
Engineering excellence in construction means delivering safe, high quality, sustainable and cost-effective projects on time and to clients’ expectations. I lead with integrity, accountability, teamwork, and clear communication. I focus on enabling teams, setting high standards and leading by experience and example.
Prime Insights: What are some of the key projects or initiatives that have played a significant role in defining your career and industry influence?
A major highlight of my career has been the opportunity to work on a wide range of projects rather than focusing on a single niche. This range has exposed me to different scales, challenges, client expectations and operational needs and has allowed me to develop a well-rounded understanding of the industry.
For example, it was working on housing projects that taught me one of the most fundamental principles of design and development: how to get the most out of every square inch of land. Residential projects require a delicate balance between functionality, aesthetics and comfort at the same time. Each space needs to have a function and each design choice impacts how people live in and use their homes. I think it would be fair to close my journey. I have been molded in different ways by different projects. Each of them gave me unique lessons and experiences that expanded my vision and expertise.
Prime Insights: How do you ensure that innovation, quality, and sustainability remain at the heart of your projects?
To guarantee innovation, quality and sustainability, I adopt new design approaches, choose durable and eco-friendly materials and keep abreast of industry trends. Every project is carefully designed to integrate aesthetics, functionality, efficiency and long-term value, while complying with client and environmental requirements.
Prime Insights: How does technology and digital transformation contribute to enhancing construction efficiency and infrastructure development?
As an architect, I see technology and digital transformation as key to improving design accuracy, project coordination, and construction efficiency. Tools such as BIM, 3D visualization and digital collaboration platforms are helping to reduce errors, optimise resources, improve decision making and deliver better infrastructure outcomes.
Prime Insights How do you manage large teams, stakeholders and complex projects while still maintaining operational excellence?
I manage large teams and complex projects through effective communication, thorough planning and effective coordination with all stakeholders. I ensure quality, efficiency and operational excellence by setting clear goals, tracking progress diligently, promoting teamwork and proactively resolving problems.
Prime Insights What approaches do you take in addressing emerging industry issues like urbanisation, sustainability and resource optimisation?
I respond to changing challenges by sustainable design, better space utilisation, use of energy efficient materials and technologies and plan for future urban needs. I create functional, eco-friendly and resource-efficient developments that provide enduring value.
Prime Insights: How do you foster a culture of collaboration, safety and continuous improvement in your organisation?
As an architect and a leader, I promote collaboration through open communication, teamwork and common goals. I am committed to safety by adhering to standards and best practices. I advocate continuous improvement by promoting learning, innovation, feedback and adoption of new technologies to improve project outcomes.
Prime Insights: What is the best milestone or achievement that best reflects your contribution to the construction and infrastructure sector?
Working on the urban redevelopment project in Hampi was one of the most important achievements of my career. “Hampi is a place of great historical and cultural importance, and to be involved in a project that attempted to strike a balance between preservation, development and the needs of the local community was a privilege and a responsibility.
This project was a great learning experience for me in understanding the complexities of urban planning in a heritage context where all intervention should respect the legacy of the site while improving infrastructure and creating better experience for visitors and residents. It highlighted the importance of strategic planning, stakeholder collaboration, and sustainable development.
This milestone is particularly meaningful to me because it gave me the chance to be a part of a project that had a lasting impact beyond physical infrastructure. It was about building spaces and systems that help communities thrive while protecting a cultural treasure for the future. The experience was an eye-opener for me in terms of the possibilities of infrastructure and development serving people and heritage and it is one of the defining moments of my professional journey.
Prime Insights: How do you mentor and encourage more women into leadership roles in engineering, construction and infrastructure?
I’ve never thought of my career in terms of limitations, and I encourage women to think about what they can do, not what they can’t. I mentor by sharing experiences, providing direction when needed and creating opportunities for women to assume meaningful responsibilities. My message is simple: leadership is not about gender, it is about competence, confidence, integrity and ownership. When you empower women to believe in their abilities, they automatically grow into leadership.
Prime Insights: What initiatives has your organisation taken to promote sustainability, community development and responsible infrastructure growth?
We believe that development should create long-term value for clients and stakeholders, and for communities and the environment. We integrate sustainability and responsible growth into our approach from the planning stage. We emphasize the importance of land use, resource conscious design and infrastructure that is functional, durable and responsive to its surroundings.
We are conscious of maintaining the natural and cultural context of the places we work in, making sure that development adds to the environment, not subtracts. We strive for thoughtful planning, energy efficiency and the responsible use of materials in our projects whenever we can.
In the community, we seek to create places that improve quality of life, support local economies, and encourage real human connection. Good infrastructure is about creating places that help people and benefit their communities, not just buildings and roads.
At the end of the day, we want to create projects that are a mix of growth, sustainability and social impact, to make sure that the development we do now continues to be good for future generations.
Prime Insights: What advice would you give to aspiring professionals looking to build a successful career in the construction and engineering sectors?
My advice to aspiring professionals is to stay curious, stay grounded, and never stop learning.
The construction and engineering industries are very dynamic and success is based on developing technical expertise as well as a pragmatic understanding of how projects come together in the real world. Seek out varied experiences early in your career. Every project, big or small, has lessons to be learned. Working on different types of projects gave me a broader perspective and helped me develop skills I rely on to this day.
Equally important is to build strong relationships. Construction and engineering are collaborative industries and the ability to work effectively with clients, consultants, contractors and teams is just as important as technical knowledge.
Lastly, be patient and persistent. There are no short cuts to experience. Take ownership of your work, embrace challenges and view each obstacle as a chance to learn. Over time, your credibility will be built by the quality, consistency and integrity of your work, not by your words.
Prime Insights: Lastly, what message would you want to pass on to our readers on leadership, resilience and driving the future of infrastructure development?
Leadership is not about knowing everything, it’s about getting people to work together towards a common goal. Staying positive, adapting to challenges, and never giving up when things get tough – this is where resilience comes from. As we build stronger infrastructure to shape the future, let’s build smarter, greener, more sustainable communities for generations to come. The future is for those who are willing to learn, innovate and make a difference.
