Prime Insights: Could you provide an overview of your professional journey and your specialization in surgical oncology?
I am Dr. Rahulkumar N. Chavan, a surgical oncologist practicing in Mumbai. While pursuing my Mastery of Surgery (M.S.) from a reputed institute of North-east India, IPGMER (Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education and Research), I saw many young ones dying of cancer. It gave me an inward drive to do my super-specialization in cancer surgery, M.Ch. Surgical Oncology, at the country’s premier institute, Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai.
Prime Insights: What inspired you to dedicate your career to cancer surgery and patient care?
Rising cancer burden in India, lack of adequate number of expertise in the country, complex nature of surgeries posing challenge to surgeons and fact that surgery remains the most effective treatment for solid cancers all these facts made me enter into the field of cancer surgery.
Prime Insights: How do you define surgical excellence in the modern era of oncology treatment?
In the modern era, organ conservation, improving maximum survival with good functional outcome would define surgical excellence in the modern era of oncology. In the modern era we have laparoscopy and robotic surgery options available which would add to the precision, less morbidity and early recovery.
Prime Insights: What are the most significant advancements in surgical oncology that have transformed cancer care in recent years?
Improved understanding about the biology of disease, modern targeted drugs, robotic and laparoscopy surgeries, improved anesthesia care for prolonged surgeries like cytoreduction and HIPEC all these factors have transformed cancer care in recent years.
Prime Insights: How do you balance precision, innovation, and patient safety during complex cancer surgeries?
During complex cancer surgeries like GI cancer or thoracic, robotic, laparoscopy surgeries these innovations add to the precision at the same time patient safety is improved due to less pain and incision.
Prime Insights: What role does technology, including robotic and image-guided surgery, play in your practice?
Technological advancement plays an immense role, the most important thing is it gives us precision, it avoids painful long incisions, precision ultimately adds to improved surgical outcome with less complications and early recovery from surgery.
Prime Insights: How do you collaborate with medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, and other specialists to ensure comprehensive cancer care?
For all our complex cancer cases we as a team of medical oncologist, surgical oncologist and radiation oncologist discuss the cases in detail and unanimously make a plan that is most suitable for that patient. So multidisciplinary cancer care is our back bone in the management of our cancer patients.
Prime Insights: What are some of the most challenging cases you have managed, and what lessons did they teach you?
I have operated upon world’s longest gastro intestinal stromal tumor, world largest intra thoracic thyroid, and largest asymptomatic pheochromocytoma and few cases of complicated fistulas which were abandoned by other institutes. All these cases were challenging. In all the cases maintaining surgical principles were most important. Complicated cases can have normal postoperative life if done with proper surgical oncology principles.
Prime Insights: How do you support patients and their families throughout the emotional and physical challenges of cancer treatment?
Emotional support for families is very important. In cancer treatment one has to maintain a balance between breaking bad news explaining the facts and prognosis to the patient and to the relatives. At the same time an oncologist has the duty to keep the morale of the patient and his relatives high to withstand the prolonged course of cancer treatment. A positive attitude does help in compliance with the treatment.
Prime Insights: What achievements or milestones best represent your impact as a surgical oncologist?
After my MS, after clearing superspeciality entrance when I was selected into Tata Memorial Hospital Mumbai, country’s most premier cancer institute to study super specialization in cancer surgery, M.Ch surgical oncology, it was my most important milestone in a life.
Prime Insights: Finally, what message would you like to share with patients, caregivers, and aspiring oncologists about the fight against cancer?
For patients I would advise, always treat yourself as a superior to cancer, it will boost up their morale to fight for cancer. For caregivers sympathy with the patients, patience and hope can make a patient’s cancer treatment journey healthy with positive outcome.
