The former CEO of eBay from 1998 to 2008 and of Hewlett Packard from 2011 to 2015, Meg Whitman is currently the Chief Executive of HPE since 2018. She is marked as one of the most talented businesswomen of Silicon Valley.
Meg was born of 4th Aug 1956 at Cold Spring Harbor, New York. After completing her school from the Cold Spring Harbor High School, she wanted to become a doctor. So, in 1974, for the quest of becoming a doctor, she joined Princeton University to study Mathematics and Science. However, the feeling of being an entrepreneur got infused in her all of a sudden and she changed her course midway to complete BA in Economics. After completing her graduation in 1977, she got her MBA done from Howard Business School in 1979.
Meg’s career began in San Francisco where she joined the Bain & Company. Her talent and hardwork made her the company’s Senior Vice-President in just 10 years. She then moved to Walt Disney Company after securing the position of Vice-President of Strategic Planning in 1989 in the same company. Furthermore, she joined Stride Rite Corporation 1991 and then again she became the CEO of Transworld Delivery company in 1995.
Her continuous change of jobs was because she very easily rose to a senior position in any company she joined in a very short span. Many companies were ready to take her as a part of their board. In 1977, she was made the General Manager of the Funskool division. She brought the teleshow Teletubbies of the US to a successful position and also marketed the Mr Potato head product.
In 1998, a big success came to her way when she joined eBay as the CEO. It was because of her, the company became a huge success and one of the highest visited websites in the world today. She started to help the company by organizing the company’s structure in 23 business sectors that were further split up into 30,000 sub-categories. She assigned each member with the responsibility of the management of these categories. Gradually, the number of customers increased and the website became more organized.
Whitman’s leadership skills made eBay into a $7 billion enterprise with around 14,500 employees by 2007. In the whole history of the United States, she has been the most successful CEO. She has also been on the boards of companies like Goldman Sachs, Dream Works SKG, and Teach for America etc.
On September 2011 she became the CEO of Hewlett Packard and just a year later, her role as a CEO earned her $15.1 million in salary. She stands as one of the most influential women in the world. By 2013, her net worth was $1.8 billion which rose to $5.4 billion at present.
In 2017, Whitman was awarded an honorary doctorate degree as the speaker for Carnegie Mellon University. Recently, she has also agreed to become the CEO of NewTV, a media startup that forms short videos for mobile devices. NewTV is recently named Quibi and its app was launched in April 2020.
