A new academic role for Jack Ma: turns up as a college professor in Japan

As per The Times of India, Chinese billionaire Jack Ma took up a visiting professor profession position in Japan last Monday 1st of May 2023. It is another new academic role for the founder of the big tech giant- Alibaba.

It is announced by the Tokyo College which is part of the prestigious University of Tokyo that he would share his divine and enriched experience along with pioneering knowledge on corporate management, entrepreneurship and innovation. It will be shared openly with all staff and students at the seminar there. A man of 58 has kept his profile low since his fall from grace during a Chinese government crackdown that happened two years ago on the tech industry. His most recent honorific appointment came from the University of Hong Kong‘s business school. It is reportedly going to be a three-year term ending in March 2026.

Tokyo College also mentioned on its website that Ma would conduct joint research and projects with its faculty members mainly in the field of food production and sustainable agriculture management. This tech giant magnate, as a visiting professor, is also going to provide advice and support on research topics. Before Alibaba’s launch, whose operations have widened across all e-commerce fields, media, AI and cloud computing, Ma has taught for eight years, English at Hangzhou Dianzi University in eastern China. There he was one of the most wanted targets of a crackdown on alleged anti-competitive practices by some of China’s biggest names in tech from the later half of 2020.

This role is the second academic role for Jack Ma. It is said that Ma also heads his own Jack Ma Foundation which is a philanthropic organization that culturally reflects his knowledge and insight on certain topics that he now is going to share with his fellow students at Tokyo University. Chinese regulators once singled out Alibaba for scrutiny in a recent technology crackdown but had the brakes on the planned initial public offering in 2020 of Alibaba’s financial affiliate Ant Group. This happened after he criticized China’s regulators and financial systems in an opening speech in Shanghai.

The tenure of his new role will be from May 1, 2023, to 31st October 2023. He will share some major research topics and enlighten the students with some important facts about sustainable agriculture. Till 2020, Ma was China’s richest person with a net worth of $38.8 billion. His trouble began after he blasted China’s regulatory system when he commented about China’s stifling innovation and urged Beijing to seek a system of accommodated development. This set a chain of events and the regulators soon suspended his Ant Group worth $37 billion IPO before the fintech giant’s public listing.

Tokyo College, which was established in 2019, links the University of Tokyo with researchers and organisations abroad, such as College de France. Its research is concentrated on topics like the digital revolution. His new surprising role after a long gap of more than 2 years after his own created empire was wiped out by the Chinese Government is now going to make some significant changes. He was rarely seen in the public for last 3 years. His sudden decision to take up this honorary post of academic teaching is making a huge media coverage and spreading widely like fire.
