Established on 16th August, 1984, GAIL India, formerly known as Gas Authority of India Limited, is the country’s flagship natural gas company. It was conceived with the goal of facilitating sustained development of India’s natural gas sector through the creation of gas sector infrastructure.
Being a major player in India’s natural gas scene, the company integrates all aspects of the natural gas value chain including exploration and production, transmission, processing, distribution and marketing, among other services.
From startingits first pipeline in the 90s to leveragingan international outreach, GAILhas come a long way in its journey. Here’s a timeline of some significant events that’ve transpired in the brand’s history:
The brand’s growth between 1987 – 2000 was rather gradual. During this period, it was more focused on getting its feet on the ground and acquiring a stronghold in the market.
1987: GAIL got its first big project – the HVJ (Hazira – Vijaipur – Jagdishpur) Natural Gas pipeline commissioned.
1990: LPG Plant Phase – I at Vijaipur commissioned.
1991: GAIL’s 2800 km Hazira – Vijaipur – Jagdishpur (HVJ) pipelinebecame operational.
1993:The brand successfully constructedthree LPG plants and also acquired some regional pipelines. Thisserved as the foundation for GAIL to begin its natural gas distribution indifferent parts of the nation.
1997: GAIL began its citygas distribution in at Delhi. The project entailed the setup of 9 CNG Stations thatcatered to the fuel demands of public transport vehicles.
1999: GAILestablished North India’s sole petrochemical plant at Pata.
The early 2000s was a period of dramatic growth and transformation for the company. It not only attained several milestones but also expanded its outreach at the international level.
2001: GAIL achieved the milestone of becoming the First Infrastructure Provider Category II Licensee. It signed the country’s first service-level agreement for leasing bandwidth in the Delhi-Vijaipur Sector through its telecom business GAILTEL. In the same year, GAIL also commissioned world’s longest and India’s first cross country LPG Transmission Pipeline from Jamnagar to Loni.
2002: Gas Authority of India was renamed GAIL (India)in viewof its strategic diversification into domains like petrochemicals, liquid hydrocarbons, and liquefied natural gas.
2003:, Bhagyanagar Gas Limited, a joint venture of GAIL and HPCL was incorporated. It was geared towardsthe distribution and marketing of Auto LPG, CNG for vehicles and retailing of natural gas in cities of Andhra Pradesh.
2004: The brand conceived a wholly–owned subsidiary company GAIL Global (Singapore) Pte Ltd in Singapore.
2007: GAIL formed two joint Venture companies, one at the national level and one at the international level. Its national venture was the Brahmaputra Cracker and Polymer Limited, which was formed for implementing Assam Gas Cracker Project. The international one was a collaboration with China Gas Global Energy Holdings Limited.
2010: GAILranked no.1 company among gas utilities in Asia in the Platts Global Ranking.
2011 – Present
The 2010s was a periodof further expansionand diversification for GAIL. The brand also won a host of accolades for its performance and commitment to quality.
2011: GAIL Gas Limited and Vadodara Mahanagar Sewa Sadan set up Joint Venture for City Gas Distribution. In the same year, GAIL (India) Limited was conferred the ‘Managing India Award’ for the ‘Outstanding PSU of the Year’ by All India Management Association.GAIL is the first PSU to be conferred this award.
GAIL was also conferred MoU Excellence Award for the year 2009–10 for Best Performing CPSE in the Petroleum Sector consecutively for second year.
Furthermore, GAIL has been ranked World’s No. 1 in Downstream Operations in Platts Global Energy Awards.
2012: GAIL’s 2200 km Dahej–Vijaipur–Dadri–Bawana–Nangal–Bhatinda cross–country pipeline was inaugurated by the then-Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh.
Later, in the same year, a GSPA signed was between GAIL and TurkrnenGaz for Turkmenistan–Afghanistan–Pakistan–India (TAPI) Gas Pipeline Project.
GAIL’s Other Noteworthy Achievements
National Award for Excellence in Cost Management 2009 GAIL won the Third Award in the public sector Manufacturing (Large) category
A Certificate of Recognition for Excellence in Corporate Governance in the 10th ICSI National Award for Excellence in Corporate Governance 2010 as one of the Top Companies adopting Excellent Practices in Corporate Governance.
SCOPE Meritorious Award for Corporate Governance for the year 2007–08.
Rajiv Gandhi National Quality Award as the best performer among the Large Scale Manufacturing Industry.
