What are lab-grown diamonds, and how are they any good?
Lab-grown diamonds are just like natural diamonds. While naturally mined diamonds form below the surface of the earth over millions of years, lab-grown diamonds can be ‘grown’ in a lab over a period of a few weeks.
Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) and High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) are the two main methods used to create lab-grown diamonds. In these, a tiny diamond seed is planted in an environment where it develops into a bigger diamond. To simulate the circumstances that exist far below the surface of the earth, where real diamonds are created, HPHT employs high pressure and high temperature. In CVD, the diamond seed is coated with carbon atoms in a low-pressure chamber, progressively increasing the diamond’s size.
Unlike natural diamonds, lab-grown diamonds can be created with specific qualities, such as color, clarity, and size. This level of precision allows for the creation of diamonds that may be challenging or rare to find in natural diamonds. Furthermore, lab-grown diamonds are more affordable than their mined counterparts, making them an attractive option for consumers.
