Prime Insights: Can you introduce yourself and share what inspired you to pursue a career in radiology?
I am Dr. Arvind V. Salunke, a 49-year-old senior consultant radiologist at Clinico Scan in Thane and Mumbai, with over 20 years of experience. I practice all imaging modalities, including X-rays, CT, MRI, and ultrasound, PET-CT, and do interventions like biopsies and pigtail catheter insertions. My inspiration to pursue radiology came during my medical school years when I saw how imaging could non-invasively reveal critical diagnoses, guiding life-saving treatments. The combination of technology, precision, and patient impact drew me to this field, and I’ve been passionate about it ever since.
Prime Insights: How do you make sure of the accuracy and quality of diagnoses in your radiological practice?
Accuracy in radiology is paramount. I follow a systematic approach: I review patient history and clinical findings before interpreting images. I use high-resolution equipment and double-check findings with advanced tools like 3D reconstruction or contrast enhancement when needed. I also consult with referring physicians to correlate imaging with clinical symptoms. Regular calibration of machines, adherence to standardized protocols, and continuous learning through workshops and journals help me maintain diagnostic quality.
Prime Insights: What are some of the most advanced imaging technologies or methods you currently use?
I regularly use cutting-edge technologies like multislice CT, high-end MRI, and many other imaging modalities for detailed neuroimaging, body imaging, pediatric and MSK studies for better tissue characterization, and Doppler ultrasound for vascular assessments. For interventions, I depend on CT scanners and USG-guided techniques for precise biopsies and catheter insertions. I’ve also use AI-based tools for detecting subtle anomalies in chest X-rays and mammograms, which improve diagnostic accuracy and speed.
Prime Insights: In your opinion, what sets you apart from other radiologists in the country?
My extensive experience across all modalities, with my hands-on expertise in interventions, sets me apart. I prioritize a clinical approach, making sure imaging aligns with patient symptoms through direct collaboration with referring doctors. My empathy and focus on patient communication also help me build trust. Additionally, I mentor young radiologists and contribute to academic research.
Prime Insights: How do you stay updated with the changing advancements in radiology and diagnostic imaging?
I stay updated by attending national and international radiology conferences, such as those by the Indian Radiological and Imaging Association (IRIA). I subscribe to journals like The Indian Journal of Radiology and Imaging and Radiology. Online platforms like Radiopaedia and webinars on upcoming technologies, such as AI in radiology, are invaluable. I also participate in hands-on workshops to learn new techniques, making sure I remain current with global standards.
Prime Insights: What has been the most challenging case in your career, and how did you handle it?
There are plenty.
“I recall a notable case of acute pancreatitis where radiological findings revealed necrotizing pancreatitis with extensive necrosis and collections. I successfully inserted multiple pigtail drains over 2 months, draining infected material. This case shows the huge role of radiology in both diagnosis and therapeutic management.”
Also, have done many life-saving therapeutic procedures and managed post-surgical complications.
“Dr. Arvind Salunke’s journey is a testament to how precision, innovation, and compassion in radiology can not only transform diagnoses but also profoundly impact lives—one image at a time.”
Prime Insights: Patient care and empathy are crucial in healthcare. How do you use compassion in your practice?
I believe empathy is as vital as technical expertise. During biopsies, I explain the procedure in simple terms, looking after patient fears and making sure they feel heard. I maintain a calm demeanor to ease anxiety, especially for those going through painful procedures like pigtail catheter insertions. Post-procedure, I follow up to check on their recovery. Compassion builds trust, which is required for patient care in radiology.
Prime Insights: How do you balance your time between diagnostics, reporting, patient interaction, and continuing education?
Time management is key. I give my mornings to diagnostics and interventions, for focused attention on imaging and procedures. Afternoons are for reporting, where I take urgent cases. I give time for patient interaction during procedures or consultations, making sure they understand their results. Evenings are for continuing education—reading journals, attending webinars, or mentoring residents. I also use digital tools to do reporting, freeing up time for learning and patient care.
Prime Insights: What role does innovation play in radiological diagnosis and treatment planning?
Innovation is central to my practice. I use technologies like AI for faster and more accurate detection of abnormalities, such as early-stage cancers. I also use advanced imaging techniques, like functional MRI, to aid in precise treatment planning for neurologists and oncologists. By staying open to new methods, such as minimally invasive interventions, I aim for better outcomes for patients while reducing recovery times and risks.
Prime Insights: Have you been involved in any community outreach, academic teaching, or awareness programs related to radiology? If yes, please elaborate.
Yes, I’m involved in community outreach and teaching.
I have been practicing in a charitable hospital for the last 18 years.
I’ve organized awareness programs on breast cancer screening, showing the importance of early mammograms, which have helped increase early detection rates in my community.
Prime Insights: How do you maintain ethical standards and transparency in your practice?
I follow ethical guidelines set by the Medical Council of India. I ensure informed consent for all procedures, telling risks and benefits clearly. I dont over-order unnecessary imaging to minimize radiation exposure and costs for patients. Transparency is maintained by providing detailed, jargon-free reports and being honest about diagnostic uncertainties, often looking for second opinions when needed for the best care.
Prime Insights: Could you share any awards, recognitions, or milestones that show your journey as one of India’s most preferred radiologists?
Looking back at my career, a few moments stand out. I was honoured to receive the Fellowship of the Royal College of Radiologists in London. Academically, achieving my master’s degree in radiology from the National University of Singapore was a significant milestone. On the professional front, seeing our work recognized when our poster presentation was selected as the ‘Best Poster Presentation’ at RSNA 2011 was very rewarding. Furthermore, the recognition of Clinico Diagnostic Centre as the ‘Best Diagnostic Centre’ by Mid Day in 2015 and also as the ‘Best Diagnostic Centre for Quality Brands’ were proud achievements for our entire team, reflecting our commitment to excellence.
Prime Insights: How do you handle the psychological and emotional stress associated with providing critical diagnoses?
Providing critical diagnoses, like cancer, is emotionally taxing. I focus on the facts and practicing empathy. I tell the news with sensitivity, so that the patient and family understand the diagnosis and next steps while giving hope with treatment options. For stress, I practice mindfulness and discuss challenging cases with colleagues, which helps me process emotions and maintain mental resilience.
Prime Insights: What advice would you give to young medical professionals aspiring to become leading radiologists?
I advise young radiologists to master the basics of imaging while staying curious about new technologies. Build strong clinical correlations by working with other specialties. Develop empathy—patients value a doctor who listens. Lifelong learning with journals, conferences, and hands-on training. Finally, focus on precision and ethics; your reputation as a radiologist depends on trust and accuracy.
Prime Insights: What is your vision for the future of radiology in India, and how do you see yourself contributing to it?
I see radiology in India becoming more accessible and advanced, with AI and telemedicine filling gaps in rural healthcare. I see a future where early diagnosis with imaging reduces mortality from diseases like cancer and tuberculosis. I am mentoring the next generation of radiologists, advocating for affordable imaging technologies, and continuing my community outreach efforts to make sure radiology reaches underserved populations.
