  • A renowned German entrepreneur and the owner of the Schwarz Gruppe, Dieter Schwarz is also the CEO and Chairman of the hypermarket chain Kaufland and the supermarket chain, Lidl. By 2014, he was the 23rd richest person around the globe, according to the Hurun Report Global Rich List. He is also the richest man in Germany.
  • Dieter was born on 24th of September 1939. The Schwarz & Lidl discount chain was founded by his father who was a renowned businessman of Germany of his time. After his father, the entire responsibility of the supermarket chain got levied upon the shoulders of Dieter.
  • The retail marketing sector of Germany was moving very slowly during the year 1977. With the help of his knack of reading and learning, Dieter found out the possible deals that could influence the growth of his company. Soon with his hard work and dedication, he created the entire empire and got the full ownership of the hypermarket chain of Kaufland.
  • Soon Dieter decided to sell the shares of Lidl to a charitable foundation. He also took control over the shares of the Dieter Schwarz Foundation by transforming it into a charitable purpose rather than just a foundation. His current estimated net worth is around $16.4 billion.

  • Dieter’s business strategy always kept a check on his biggest competitors, Aldi Nord and Aldi Sued. In 1973, he opened his first Lidl discount store in Ludwigshafen, Germany. Soon after this, he bought the naming rights from Ludwig Lidl because he always believed that to create a vast empire, one must create it on his own.
  • In 1984, after opening the discount chain Kaufland, he began to widespread his business through late 1980s and 1990s all over Europe. In France, he opened the first Lidl store outside of Germany. Soon the supermarket chains stretched to almost every country in Europe including France and England.
  • Known to the whole world for his outstanding decision making, kindness and business strategy, Schwarz has donated hundreds of millions of dollars not only to charity but also to setup his own graduate school for business and law. Till date, the Dieter Schwarz Foundation supports day care facilities for children and their education, along with other science and research projects.
  • With his estimated net worth, Dieter is still ranked as the #46 richest man in the world and 5th richest man in Germany as per Forbes. In 2007, he was awarded through the dignity of an honorary citizen of Heilbronn for his philanthropic giving and unique marketing ideologies. The Dieter Schwarz’s Schwarz Gruppe still runs with revenues exceeding $100 billion.
