Dara Khosrowshahi is an Iranian-American businessman and the current CEO of Uber since 2017. Previously he was the CEO of a company that works on several travel fare aggregators named the Expedia Group. He is also among the board of directors of BET.com and Hotels.com.
Born in Iran in 1969, Khosrowshahi, founded a wide conglomerate named the Alborz Investment Company that deals with food distribution, pharmaceuticals, trading, chemicals, packaging and services. He graduated in 1987 from the Hackley School which is a university-preparatory in Tarrytown. From Brown University, he graduated in Electrical and Electronics Engineering in 1991.
Dara’s career began in an investment bank in 1991 when he joined Allen & Company as an Analyst. He left this job 7 years later and started to work for one of his former clients at the bank, Barry Diller, at Diller’s USA Networks. In this company, he was given the position of senior vice-president for his strategically planning method and then became its president. In another company by Diller, he was the chief financial officer of IAC.
When IAC purchased Expedia in 2001, Khosrowshahi became its CEO in 2005. 10 years later, the company gave him $90 million as a part of a long-term employment agreement, based on one condition that he would stay in the company until 2020.
He was given the award of Pacific Northwest Entrepreneur of the Year in 2013 June from Ernst & Young. By 2016, Dara was the highest paid CEO in the US. Under his leadership, Expedia expanded to more than 60 countries, acquiring Orbitz, Travelocity and HomeAway.
A life changing event took place in 2017 when he became the CEO of Uber in August after succeeding its founder Travis Kalanick. Uber paid him around $200 million to take this position and he became a member of the Uber’s board of directors.
Dara was determined to change Uber’s image and so he replaced Kalanick’s once-inviolable 14 values such as “always be hustlin and super pumped” with other values focussing on “customer obsession”.
Being the CEO of Uber, Dara efficiently manages the company’s fast growing business in more than 63 countries across the globe and also handles a global team of more than 23,000 employees.
It was because of Dara that the changing platform of Uber spontaneously spread its business into other sectors like electric bikes and further in the world-famous UberEats. As of now, Uber’s initial market sales have exceeded $75.5 billion and keeps the hope of soaring further high.
Dara’s net worth is estimated to be $20 million on an average. His long history and expertise in technology along with familiar connections have made him capable of running Uber successfully. After having lived 49 years of his life, he has shown an extraordinary example of rising to a star through a life filled with both hardships and influences.
