The Covid-19 pandemic, which has engulfed the whole world, had its origins in Wuhan, China. The first cases of COvid-19 were recognized in December 2019, and then began rapidly spreading across the globe. It was declared a pandemic, not since the Spanish Flu in the 1920s. The entire world has been affected and with innumerable deaths. India, the second-highest population, has recorded over four million cases and almost seventy-six thousand deaths. In the United States, there are greater than six million cases and approx two lakh deaths.
Globally, no fatalities have approached one million, and the total affected patients are thirty million. But to everybody’s amazement, the origin country of the disease, China, has only eighty-six thousand cases and with less than five thousand fatalities. It has left the whole world bewildered. The country with the highest population globally has only one percent of the cases, like that of the country with the no.2 population. This fact has led researchers, doctors, and policymakers to study the reasons behind this incredible phenomenon. Let us analyze the perspective behind this unprecedented change.
The Chinese authorities have tried various small and big measures, which has dramatically helped contain the pandemic. The steps they have taken can be applied to other countries, but the critical thing to notice is that some actions are specific for China and cannot be implemented in other nations. The authorities took medical, law, and public governance experts’ assistance to make an action plan for combating this epidemic. The steps were carried out large scale, considering that China has the largest population, more than 1.4 billion. They established a separate body known as the Central Leading Group for Novel Coronavirus Prevention and Control, which collaborated with the Joint Prevention and Control Mechanism of the State Council to arrange resources and starting the work.
1) The total lockdown was imposed in Wuhan.
As soon as the news of the COVID -19 virus came, China’s authorities ordered a complete lockdown in Wuhan, stopping the whole movement of goods in and out of the city. Besides, a total lockdown was imposed in other towns of Hubei city, affecting six crore people. All trains and flights were completely stopped. Not only Wuhan, but the complete lockdown was also carried out in all the major Chinese cities like Shanghai, Beijing, Shenzen, Guangzhou. Nearly half of the population were told to stay in their homes, a considerable number. All types of schools, colleges, universities were immediately closed, and students were sent on leave for the whole year and were attending classes and giving exams online.
2) All interactions were carried out using Baidu.
In place of human to human interactions, authorities decided to ask the general public to do all their daily transactions using Baidu. Every transaction like food, medicines, plants, clothes, and virtually all life necessities was ordered using Baidu.
3) Stringent laws in China.
Since the Communist Party is in power in China, they have very stringent laws, which need to be followed. The slogan ‘Healthy China’ has been converted to that of law. They have created a public health legal system with Health Promotion Law and Basic Healthcare as its foundation. There are also multiple laws like the Emergency Response Law, Law on the Prevention and Treatment of Infectious Diseases, Drug Administration Law, and Frontier Health and Quarantine Law. Various treatments were done, which included a mixture of Western Medicine and Traditional Chinese Medicine, to minimize the spread of COVID.
It can be harmlessly said that China has, to a great extent, curb the virus’s spread. Scientists and researchers in China are working extra hard to bring out a vaccine for this disease. Reports suggest that a suitable vaccine will be invented in China by the end of the year in 2020. Although the Communist Party of China is known to depict misleading facts and data, independent studies led by various teams on the ground and reputed news agencies like Reuters have confirmed that there has been a rapid decline in COVID-19 cases in the country. However, the authorities are keeping extra vigilance on the ground to prevent a second outbreak. Lockdowns have been lifted partially, and still, there are many restrictions in place. There has been a complete ban on outward flights from China since Chinese people are among the world’s most extensive outbound travelers. Intracity flights are also restricted, and the famous bullet train is again not running. Since the last month, a small number of buses and trains have started running in selected cities.
